Hari OM HAH - I had exactly that experience couple days ago - crunchy orange leaves are a bit of a rarity in the usually sodden weather here - but we've actually had a dry one this year and in walking through a pile, I heard the crackle of them underfoot and immediately was cast back fifty years... see what you evoked??!! Nicely written Janice. This tanka for sure brings back memories of years ago. The sweet sound of crunching leaves and that sweet perfume of autumn ... ah ... I sense autumn.
Missed the mark on the love letter. If I changed the childhood line to "tender memories of you wash" then change your to my in the last line, it might work...

The year Sumitaku Kenshin was born, my family moved "in town". That move brought us into a new age, indoor plumbing. Until that time there was a galvanized tub for baths and a path for other bodily necessities. Baths were taken on the screened in back porch during the summer months. There would be 3 to 4 inches of water in the tub. Water drawn from the well just outside the house. Some of the water would be heated in the teakettle on the stove in the kitchen. Youngest child would bath first. Then up through the ages of the children. Daddy was always the last. In the same 3 to 4 inches of water.
