We have been busy the last few weeks preparing for a party for our son's 45 birthday.  It is a themed party and since he reads my blog on occasion I'll leave those details until after the party.  But there have been other things going on as well.  Weddings and St. Louis Cardinal baseball game.  There were preparations to travel to Arkansas for a young relative's wedding.  That would be followed by a drive from Arkansas to St. Louis to watch a Chicago Cubs vs. St Louis Cardinal baseball game.  Three nights of hotels in different cities.  Another wedding in September in Oregon is just on my list of things to prepare to attend.  Planning for the Oregon wedding is required, also.  Hotels and or homes have to be booked.  With the trip to Oregon with my three sisters & two of the husbands the accommodations must work for slightly less mobile persons.  Flights have to be coordinated for transportation needs.  Yes, the last month has been busy with working the different trips

coffee break

Image
Carpe Diem #1481 Coffee Break found on Tumblr In the small farming community near my Hubby's home town coffee was served year round.  I was befuddled by this as I was from the 'iced sweet tea' drinking south.  Never did I see coffee served to the field hands during summer months, always water with that huge chunk of ice.  When I asked Uncle Pete why they drank coffee instead of a cool drink his answer was quick.   "A hot drink makes it feel cooler outside." that aroma floating on the summer breeze signals break time ©    petra domina Thanks to Chèvrefeuille for daily prompts on CARPE DIEM HAIKU KAI

Carpe Diem Weekend Meditation #40 Troiku Challenge "a distant mountain" " ...For this Troiku Challenge I have chosen two haiku by Takahama Kyoshi (1874–1959) to work with. Kyoshi is not a renown haiku poet, but he has written wonderful haiku. (You can find more of his haiku  HERE ). a distant mountain seen in the sunlight: a desolate field a leaf of a paulownia tree has fallen in the sunlight © Takahama Kyoshi (Tr. Katsuya Hiromoto) Two nice haiku. Not easy to work with I think, but ... I think you can do it. wind in the verdure

Image
Carpe Diem #1464 wind in the verdure (aoarashi) While most of the farmers in the community of my childhood grew cotton, other crops were grown, too.  A field of milo was usually planted by Tommy Thompson across the road north of our house.  The field east of our house was usually corn planted by Tommy's brother, Floyd.  Another brother lived west of our place about a kilometer.  His name was Buford but he raised more sheep than crops.  The road's name was and is Thompson Lane. half grown corn winds tickling each long leaf chasing a dog ©    petra domina Thanks to Chèvrefeuille for daily prompts on CARPE DIEM HAIKU KAI   Looking northeast from our front porch.  Both fields are beyond the trees.

thin clothes

Image
Carpe Diem #1462 thin clothes (usumono) Growing up on a cotton farm in Texas summers were hot and long.  Crops were tended by hand in those days.  Weeds were hoed from the rows of plants.  Later in the season the cotton fibers would be pulled by hand, one boll at a time.  The black sandy loam soil would become hot to the touch adding to the heat.  My parents, sisters and neighbors would work together in the fields.  At times they would chat back and forth.  Sister would flirt with the neighbor boy.  Someone would tell a joke just to break the drudgery.  A truck waited at the end of the field under a shade tree if there was one.  There would sit a big, galvanized can of water with a solid chunk of ice.  The ice might last till noon.  The workers all wore hats or bonnets, long pants and long sleeved shirts to avoid sunburns. snow white field glistening in the summer sun thinly clad vixen ©    petra domina Jack Johnson and my Daddy.  They were not in work clot
