The wells of the last century required people to go into them and clean out the silt.  My Pawpa and his brother descended into the well and began the cleaning.  Everyone knew the dangers of staying in the wells too long, a build up of toxic gases.  By shear grace a friend came to check.  Both men were in the bottom of the well passed out.  Quick action and they were pulled from the well.  Both survived but Pawpa suffered from lung damages and succumbed to the complications in his late 1950's.

    1. I remembered the water would warm as it sat in the bucket on the back porch during the hot Texas summers.
