And this is what she tells about the background of this haiku:

The "jiube ga haori" is a padded vest. The "hana goromo" is a flowered robe worn for viewing blossoms. "Haori" sounds similar to "gaori", which means "to surrender to the beauty of flowers", and "kite" can mean both "come" or "wear".

In this haiku Basho uses the haiku writing technique "pun" it's a kind of technique to bring a kind of joke into the haiku. I will explain this a little later in this episode. First I love to look at a few other haiku in which this "pun" is used.

Puns are things I do in the spur of the moment.  To attempt to do a pun on command is like being told you have to love someone ..

Carpe Diem's Tan Renga Wednesday #11 family tombstone Five years ago this very morning my mother died.  I had spent the night with her at the new nursing home we had just moved her to the previous day.  She was not happy.  Due to loss of eyesight in one eye, falling and breaking a wrist in less than 5 weeks she developed delirium.  She was still enough of herself that as we were getting her ready for bed she made one statement.  "I am gonna get up and walk right out of this place by morning."  Around 7 AM I left to get a cup of coffee and stretch my legs.  When I returned her life force was gone.  adding father’s name to the family tombstone with room for my own © Nicholas Virgilio saints gather to greet arrivals she ran to Dad's arms © petra domina

neighborhood of colors

Carpe Diem #1263 neighborhood of colors After living for many decades in locations a little too monochrome in their occupants, I am pleased to be living in an apartment complex populated by a wide spectrum of colors and tones.  What joy to look up while on a walk to see someone who looks nothing like a 70 year old white woman.  To see the young mother in her hijab walking with her children.  To hear the rhythm of a different language floating across the pool.  To see the sun set profiling the gay couple as they embrace.  Yes, I am loving this neighborhood of colors. jewels glisten at sunset ©    petra domina Thanks to Chèvrefeuille for daily prompts on CARPE DIEM HAIKU KAI
